Gen. Asim Munir has been the chief of both Military Intelligence and the ISI, an uncommon combo in the Pakistan Army. He was appointed director-general of Pakistan’s Military Intelligence in early 2017 and remained in that capacity for 1 year and 9 months.
These are the reasons why the new chief’s appointment had become so acrimonious and extremely heated. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif & his brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have stated that the seniority criterion would be rigorously respected in the selection.
